Total consulting and engineering costs in 2025 have amounted to $60,830.15 including legal, engineering, plant control oversight, water quality monitoring, project administration, and the deep-water sediment and water quality study approved at the public hearings in 2024. Plant control expenditures totaled $69,828.75 including five treatments in 2025. A remaining balance of $97,341.10 remains in the 2025 overall budget. Current SAD fund balances as of November 14, 2025 are approximately $86,000 in Watervliet Township and $53,000 in Coloma Township totaling approximately $139,000.
Since 2012, a management plan has been underway to help monitor and improve conditions in Paw Paw Lake. The plan is being coordinated under the direction of Coloma and Watervliet Charter Townships with assistance from environmental and engineering consultants. The plan is funded through special assessment districts established under Michigan’s township public improvement statute (Public Act 188 of 1954). The management plan is separate from the Paw Paw Lake Foundation and the Paw Paw Lake Association.

The Paw Paw Lake Foundation (PPLF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1995, that is committed to preserving, protecting, and improving Paw Paw Lake, its ecosystem, and watershed. The foundation's primary focus is on enhancing water quality through a range of environmental initiatives, including the preservation and improvement of wetlands, protecting the lake from invasive species, and fostering a broad base of financial support. Funded entirely by donations, PPLF is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, many of whom are property owners on the lake, bringing a wealth of experience in business and lake management to its mission. The PPLF recently purchased the 77-acre former Heater Farm parcel and converted it into the Paw Paw Lake Conservancy as an effort to increase infiltration, storage, and nutrient uptake in this portion of the watershed. The PPLF is working alongside the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to strategically design the site to incorporate native plantings into the bio-swales, storage ponds, and floodplain and restoring valuable ecological services to the riparian zone. The PPLF also worked to seed the trail system on the property to encourage public engagement in these efforts. More information on the PPFL can be found on the foundation website.

The Paw Paw Lake Association (PPLA) is dedicated to protecting the health, safety, and habitat of Paw Paw Lake, while keeping lake residents informed about lake-related activities, initiatives, and news. The PPLA holds meetings on the first Saturday of the months from May to October, with adjustments for holidays, at Watervliet Township Hall. The organization is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors, with each director serving a three-year term and overseeing various committees. All property owners in the Special Assessment District are members of the association, encouraged to participate in committees, and have the opportunity to serve on the Board. Member involvement and suggestions are welcomed to help guide the association's efforts. More information on the PPLA can be found on the association website.

An extensive study of Paw Paw Lake's sediments and water quality has recently been completed to better determine the relative contribution and potential for nutrients present in the lake's sediments to the lake's overall water quality. The Paw Paw Lake water quality and sediment analysis report contains season-long water quality and lake sediment sampling data from 2024 with recommendations for potential nutrient mitigation strategies. Paw Paw Lake receives nutrients from both its watershed (external) and its sediments (internal). The Paw Paw Lake Management Plan is an evolving effort to control both internal and external nutrient sources to the extent possible using the most cost-effective management practices. More information about Paw Paw Lake's water quality can be found by clicking the water quality tab above.

A compilation of Paw Paw Lake's historical water quality data collected since 2004 utilizing a Trophic State Index indicates that Paw Paw Lake is meso-eutrophic.

Phosphorus has been determined to be the limiting nutrient that drives plant and algae growth in Paw Paw Lake. Efforts to mitigate the amount of phosphorus and other nutrients in Paw Paw Lake will continue into 2026. These efforts include the deployment of biochar bags and potentially other methods including nutrient inactivation and the exploration of hypolimnetic oxygenation.

The M-140 and Hagar Shores Road sediment trap was cleaned out this March 2025 by Trident Dock & Dredge.

A flood bench was added in September of 2024 on a portion of the Branch & Derby Drain to increase storage capacity and reduce streambank erosion. The project was jointly funded by the SAD and the Paw Paw Lake Foundation.

Stated goals of the Paw Paw Lake Management Plan include:
-
Manage and control invasive and nuisance species.
-
Improve overall water quality and water clarity – halt/reverse lake degradation.
-
Improve fisheries, wildlife, recreational, and aesthetic values of the lake.
-
Provide educational outreach.
-
Measure success of the plan.
